Abstract

Murraya koenigii (Linn.) Spreng is a medicinal plant that belongs to the family Rutaceae. It is a multi-potential plant that has been widely used in traditional medicine systems as it possesses numerous notable medicinal properties such as antioxidative, hepatoprotective, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activities. All information on M. koenigii was collected from various electronic databases and published materials. This literature review aims to discuss the current understanding regarding the traditional uses and phytochemistry of M. koenigii. Phytochemical analyses on the leaves, bark, roots, and fruits of M. koenigii have concluded that M. koenigii is a rich source of carbazole alkaloids which contribute to its reported pharmacological activities. Besides, the studies on pharmacological properties (antibacterial, cytotoxicity and toxicity) are discussed. However, none of these studies are of clinical study. Limitations are present in some studies that questions the reliability and validity of the results. The limitations include the lack of repetition, unknown source of test model, lack of positive control, and so on. Therefore, an experimental design with replication of analysis, source of test model, and use of control is important to produce reproducible experimental results in order to make way for clinical studies on humans for the design and development of new drugs. In silico ADMET analysis and molecular docking studies were performed on thirty carbazole alkaloid derivatives to check the potential of carbazole alkaloids as a potential Staphylococcus aureus serine protease (SplA) inhibitor (4MVN) for the discovery of an alternative treatment for staphylococcal infections.
