Abstract

The essential oil has been well known for its good smell and pharmacological properties and has accompanied humans for centuries for various purposes. This popular aromatic oil is famous in many ancient civilizations like Egypt, China, and India. Essential oils are one of the secondary metabolites produced by the plant which consists of terpenes and phenylpropanoids. The physical and chemical characteristics such as viscosity, refractive index, density, acid value, saponification value, and ester value of the essential oil of essential oil can be determined. The composition and yield of an essential oil depend on internal factors include plant origin, type of plant part, stage of development, and external include environmental factors (climate and fertilizer composition), cultivation conditions (soil properties, geographical location), and postharvest process (drying methods and extraction, distillation time). Several methods such as distillation, solvent extraction, solvent-free extraction, mechanical extraction have been proposed to extract oil from different parts where different methods have both advantages and disadvantages. Thus, the most suitable extraction method is chosen to obtain a good oil quality along with the desired chemical constituents. Essential oils have been validated through studies and their different pharmacological properties enable them to use for various purposes such as antimicrobial packagings in the food industry, fragrances in a household cleaning product, and aromatherapy.
