Abstract

Adsorption has been widely used in reducing air pollution and in wastewater treatment. The powder size adsorbent exhibits higher adsorption capacity due to its larger surface area but it cannot be reactivated and it is hard to be separate out from the reservoir in wastewater treatment. When the size of the adsorbent increased into pellet size, it can be reactivated and it is relatively easier to be separated. However, the adsorption capacity of pellet size adsorbent is lower than powder size. Hence, various method has been investigated to prepare high porosity adsorbent pellets. The methods including graphite moulding pelletization method, mold shaping, agar method, sol-gel method, carbonization and activation and arching dendrimer have been reviewed in this study. The particular procedure of the methods, the performance of the produced adsorbents and the properties of the produced adsorbents including mechanical strength have been studied. Besides, a small hands on experiment had been carried out to determine whether the granular activated carbon and the regenerated granular activated carbon can use in iron adsorption. Flame atom absorption spectroscopy was used to determine the absorbance of standards and samples. The percentage of adsorption was 86.90% and it was found that the regenerated granular activated carbon has lower adsorption capacity and mechanical strength.
