Abstract
Biosorption is a physiological cycle that happens normally in certain biomass. Where the biomass permits it to inactively focus and tie toxins onto its cell structure. The objective of this research is to review and determine the ability of biosorption lead (II) ion and Copper (II) ion by fungal biomass, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium sp. Followed by to review and study the effect of the pH, temperature, biomass dosage, initial concentration of metal ion to uptake the metal ions by the fungal strain. Lastly to review and determine the time taken for the biomass to remove Lead (II) ion and Copper (II) ion. Biosorption experiment was conducted at pH range of 3 to 7, followed by different biomass dosage, and then initial concentrations ranging from 25 mg/L to 250 mg/L at different contact times ranging from 20minutes to 180 minutes. At optimum parameters, which were pH 5, biomass dosage 0.25g/L and 35 ˚ C Penicillium sp showed the highest lead (II) ion and Copper (II) ion removal efficiency which was 32mg/g and 45.8 mg/g respectively. While for the Aspergillus niger the removal efficiency for lead (II) ion was 31mg and for Copper (II) ion was 42.3mg/g. The maximum lead (II) ion and Copper (II) ion removal efficiency for both fungi were obtained at pH 5 and biomass dose 1 g/L, biosorption equilibrium achieved at 2 hours contact time. From this thesis it can be concluded that Penicillium sp able to remove metal ions from waste water better than Aspergillus niger.
