Abstract

There are various types of sleeping disorders and insomnia is one of the common sleep disorders encountered by humans nowadays. Insomnia is a common sleep disorder which may happen when an individual has trouble falling or staying asleep and he/she does not feel well-rested or feel tired throughout the day after wake up. This thesis writing is conducted in order to identify and determine the impacts of insomnia on human beings either in physical or mental health and is aimed to find out how insomnia impacts on human beings as well. This study is conducted based on the methodological framework for conducting scoping review outlined by Arksey and O’Malley in order to map the main concept of the impacts of insomnia to human health especially physical and mental health and to collate as well as summarize the research findings based on the involved studies. In this scoping review, a total of 27 full-text articles regarding the impacts of insomnia are extracted after screening a total of 256 publication titles and abstracts of studies. All the involved articles have fulfilled the criteria in which they are published in English language within the year range between 2010 to 2021. According to the included studies, insomnia may bring negative impacts to the health of human beings and their daily lives. The studies are discussed by categorizing them into a few categories such as the association of insomnia with health problems, insomnia disorder among midlife women, male population and insomnia disorder among adolescents. In fact, insomnia is a common sleeping disorder encountered by people regardless of age and it is advised to be treated in order to ensure good quality of sleep as well as improved human health and quality of life.
