Abstract

Social media usage has increased over the years and many thoughts have come about to how it can affect engagement in physical activity in college students. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of social media usage on physical activity engagement in college students. There are limited studies that focus on social media usage and physical activity engagement in college students. Participants n = 107 (aged 18 to 25 years) consisted of 51 males and 56 females whom were active social media users. The participants answered the Godin-Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire which showed that the average time spent on physical activity is 33.2 minutes. Majority of the students fall under high physical activity level. A partial correlation analysis revealed that time spent on social media is associated with physical condition, psychological condition and mastery subscales of the Physical Activity Leisure Motivation Scale. It states that individuals that spent time on social media are motivated to engage in physical activity to improve their physical health, mental health and mastering a skill. It was also found that age, gender and time spent on social media has no influence in physical activity level.
