Abstract

The purpose of this study was to review the evidence of selected studies to examine the effect of resistance training on hip strength in gymnasts and dancers. A database search by using keywords resistance training, hip strength, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, gymnasts and dancers. Year of studies used was 2000 to latest 2021. Ten published studies were retained to be reviewed. Results showed evidence of improvement in hip strength by including resistance training as part of training methods for gymnasts and dancers. Different types of resistance training were able to provide improvement on certain fitness components such as power, strength and endurance. Additionally, a well-designed resistance training program able to provide improvement on hip strength without having muscle bulk. Therefore, hypertrophy was not recommended. The development of muscular strength, muscular endurance, power and joint stability should be emphasized to avoid the affection of body shape or weight of gymnasts or dancers on their performance. To provide further improvement, plyometric training, strength training, core stabilization training and elastic band resistance training was recommended to be included into the periodization plan to provide better improvement on hip strength and performance in gymnasts and dancers.
