Abstract

Badminton is a sports that requires change of direction, jump in order to hit the shuttlecock at the highest point, lunges in order to reach the shuttlecock, and also rapid arm movement in order to produce power movement. Therefore, in order to have better enjoyment and performance, body shape plays an important role for social badminton players. Body shape concern has been linked to development of eating disorders. The presence of eating disorders has been increased not only among athletes but also general population. While many studies have researched on weight-sensitive sports such as Mixed Martial Arts and sports that focus on aesthetic such as Rhythmic Gymnastics. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to study the relationship between body shape and eating disorders among social badminton players. A total of 300 social badminton players had participated in the study by completing two questionnaires which are Contour Drawing Rating Scales and Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26). The demographic data that was used were according to age, gender, years of experience, and BMI value. The results showed that there was no correlation between Contour Drawing Rating Scales and Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26). There was significant difference in body shape according to age, genders and BMI. Besides that, there was significant difference in eating disorders according to BMI. In conclusion, individuals with different age, genders and BMI value have different thoughts and concern on their body shape. Individuals with age 18-30 years old, male and BMI value less than 18.5 showed high concern on their body shape. Individuals with BMI value 30 to 39.9 which is obese category showed highest concern on dieting and food preoccupation while BMI value less than 18.5 which is underweight category showed highest concern on oral control.
