Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between coaching behaviours, achievement motivation and goal setting among young badminton athletes. The sample of this study comprised 132 young badminton athletes (aged 9-18 years old) from seven badminton centers in Miri. The data was analysed and interpreted with SPSS version 21. There was a significant difference in coaching behaviours, achievement motivation and goal setting based on the demographic data of young badminton athletes (p < 0.05). Social support showed significant difference in gender (p=0.005) and years of experience (p=.028). However, positive feedback showed significant difference in gender (p=.032) and level of representation (p=.021). Achievement motivation showed significant difference in years of experience (p=.001) and level of representation (p=.001). Performance goal showed significant difference in all the demographic data which is gender (p=.045), years of experience (p=.001) and level of representation (p=.003). There was a strong relationship between coaching behaviours and goal setting (r= .678) and a strong relationship between achievement motivation and goal setting (r=.375). For mediation effect, achievement motivation partially mediates the relationship between coaching behaviours and goal setting as coaching behaviours showed significant influence on achievement motivation, (r = .181). In conclusion, it is essential for the coaches to understand the types of coaching behaviours preferred by athletes of different demographic background, in order to improve their achievement motivation and goal setting. For further understanding of the relationship among the variables, it is recommended that future research can be extended to other sports and involve larger sample.
