Abstract
The purpose of this systematic review is to discuss the neuromuscular and cardiorespiratory adaptations to concurrent training adaptations in elderly men. A comprehensive and structured search of articles were performed using Google scholar, and PubMed search engine which included different sets of terms such as concurrent training, neuromuscular adaptations, elderly men, resistance exercise, aerobic exercise, interference effect, cardiorespiratory adaptations, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and physiological adaptations. Each of the databases was searched from 2011 until 2021. Eleven full text articles were reviewed. Results supported the efficacy of concurrent training for elderly men to improve strength and cardiorespiratory fitness, most importantly, achieve functional independence. However, there seems to be an interference effect when aerobic exercise is performed prior to strength exercise. There are no additional benefits in spite of increased training frequency but twice a week seems to be the bare minimum. Different intrasession exercise order seems to affect strength gains but not the magnitude of hypertrophy and also aerobic capacity. Apparently, strength training before endurance activity might be more advantageous to enhancing functional activities because various functional activities are normally carried out at lower aerobic intensities. There are also no additional benefits in terms of neuromuscular and cardiorespiratory gains when sets are taken to concentric failure which means that even lower number of repetitions were able to optimize neuromuscular gains in older subjects.
