Abstract
The aim of this study was to study the effect of motivation towards recreational badminton players’ return to sport after injury recovery. A limited number of studies have been conducted involving participation motivation in racket sport, especially badminton. A total of 86 TARUC students (58 males, 28 females, age 22.16 ± 1.11 years old) were recruited to participate in this study via online survey. Non-experimental survey design was used in this study, subjects were injured previously and away from sport for more than 1 week also played badminton at least once a week and 2 hours per session when free from injury. Based on the results, gender showed significant differences between stimulation (p=0.038), accomplishment (p=0.008), identified regulation (p=0.023) and belief about engaging in sport (p=0.012). For the amount of sessions played per week, significant was found on identified regulation (0.016) and belief about preparation to return to sport (p=0.024). No significant were found between age group, injury areas and injury duration on demographic data. A very good correlation was found between participation motivation factors (Intrinsic & Extrinsic subscales) and Belief about engaging in sport. Accomplishment (p=.000), stimulation (p=0.000), identified regulation (p=.000), introjected regulation (p=.000) and external regulation (p=.000). However, only extrinsic motivation introjected regulation (p=.025) and external regulation (p=.003) showed a low to moderate correlation with the belief about preparation to return to sport. In conclusion, a very good correlation in terms of belief about engaging in sport was shown compared to belief about preparation to return to sport. Recreational badminton players have the strong belief to return to sport based on extrinsic motivation factors.
