Abstract

Self-handicapping is a process where individual create an impediment or an excuse to protect their self-worth in a physical setting (in sports or physical education classes) where it is an environment that is socially evaluative. Goal orientation and motivational climate appears to be related to self-handicapping within and individual. Therefore, the aim of the study is to systematically review goal orientation and motivational climate on self-handicapping in sports and physical education. This systematic review is based on PRISMA and PICOs protocol, the database undertaken is SpringerLink and Google Scholar. Fourteen articles met the criteria of inclusion, relating to sports and physical education on self-handicapping. The findings of the systematic review indicate that there is a relationship in performance goal orientation on self-handicapping, and also performance motivational climate on self-handicapping in both experimental and non-experimental settings. Having performance-avoidance goal orientation seems to be more detrimental to self-handicap, performance motivational climate tends to show low event importance and more likely to behaviourally self-handicap in men. Further research is warranted to understand the causal relation of self-handicapping through longitudinal studies and also more experimental design studies to better understand the mechanism of self-handicapping in sports and physical education.
