Abstract

Passion is a strong feeling of a person toward an activity that they like or love, find important, and willingly spend time and energy on the activity (Vallerand et al., 2003). The passion in sport helps an individual overcome their barrier and focus on the goals, and outwork the competition. However, that has some factors that will affect an individual passion in sport such as peers, gender, race, or socio-economic, even family. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate sport passion among Malaysian youth according to demographic data (gender, age group, marital status, type of sport, level of participation, and years of sporting experience) and examined the relationship between sport passion and family background. Subject of the subject was young Malaysian adult’s age ranged from 18 to 30 years old. The instruments for this study included demographic data, Sport Passion, Family member preference for sport, and the Valuation for sport. For the procedure of the study, first got approval to carry out this research study was obtained from The Ethical Committee of TARUC. The questionnaire was distributed to the participants via online google form. Then all the participants were informed on the purpose of this study before they answer the questionnaire. The data analyses using SPSSv26 and it include descriptive statistics, the Pearson Correlation Coefficient used to examine the relationship between sport passions and family background. Inferential statistics such as independent sample t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyses the hypothesis. The result of this study show there was a correlation between family background and sport passion. There was a significant difference in the mean of sport passion according to gender and marital status. There was no significant difference in the mean of sport passion according to age, race, type of sport, level of sport participation, and year of sporting experience.
