Abstract

Aerobic endurance fitness is essential for soccer or football players. Aerobic fitness can be assessed accurately by utilizing different laboratory protocols. However, field tests had been suggested as a substitution for laboratory protocols. Although the field tests had been developed, the studies of the tests is still lacking. The purpose of this systematic review is to examining various types of general or skill specific aerobic fitness test among soccer players. Studies were retrieved from several search engines: Google Scholar and PubMed that studied on the general or skill specific aerobic fitness tests among soccer players. 12 studies were identified and the majority showed that the Hoff, YYRIT, MSFT and Cooper Run tests can be used as aerobic fitness assessment in soccer players. The Cooper Run test is now used at present as an indirect field test for assessing aerobic fitness as an easier to examine aerobic fitness and provide an approximation of VO2max. Hoff test has been proved in some studies that the test is validated on measuring and evaluating the maximum oxygen uptake VO2max of soccer players. Although the Hoff test result was associated with VO2max. However, the correlation was not significant enough to determine VO2max directly from the test and no significant association with the other field tests such as MSFT and YYRIT. These findings provide the information to coaches and sport scientists regarding the general and skill specific tests on measuring aerobic fitness of soccer players, and the implementation of the tests for the purpose of soccer performance improvement must be wisely considered.
