Abstract

This study attempts to study how visual hierarchy is applied in book layout design. At the end of the study, a manual about knowledge of visual hierarchy will be produced to work as a guidance for deign beginners.The term Visual hierarchy is used most frequently in the visual art field, mainly graphic design but most of the design beginner nowadays lack basic design knowledge about visual hierarchy. The researcher acts as s designer to do a study on how visual hierarchy can be applied into a book layout design and manipulating the data collected into a simple form for the manual’s content. The scope of this research is to discover the possibilities of book design as a manual for design beginners. The researcher has conducted two case studies for further understand the objectives of the topics. The researcher had study on different types of book design’ layout and compare Kinfolk and Where magazine layout structure. The researcher has also selected some reference journals and their contents for analytical purposes for reference. The researcher has analysed and has come up with eight most important basic design elements and principles to create visual hierarchy in book layout design, according to the researcher’s design statement.
