Abstract

This research is to study the perspective of audiences towards the novel adaptation to movie production among the young adults in Kuala Lumpur, and to determine the major reasons for the local film industry producing novel-to-movie adaptation. The literary work adaptation to theatrical form was started in the silent era, 1800’s. In the 21st century, the practice of novel adaptation to movie production is still going on in both international and national. Nevertheless, the novel-to-movie adaptation issue has been controversial among the audiences for some time. Despite this, whether it is good or bad, everyone has different ideas about it. Hence, the research had conducted two methods to achieve the research objective, online questionnaire survey and in-depth interview. There are 100 respondents who aged from 16 to 25 involved in the online questionnaire survey, for the purpose of the perspective of audiences towards the novel-to-movie adaptation. While, there are 2 experts who experienced and worked from local creative industries invited for in-depth interview, for the major reasons of the film industry producing novel-to-movie adaptation. Based on the result indicated in the online survey questionnaire, the researcher concluded that movie adaptation seems more promising and preferable compared to the novel itself in Malaysia. Whereas, for the in-depth interview, the researcher found out that the local film industry is still working on the progress of novel-to-movie adaptation in Malaysia in order to catch up to the international standard.
