Abstract

Consumption of entertainment news has seen changes over the generations including in the context of the preferred medium and habits. From the aspect of the young generation, it is not difficult to notice that they are influenced by social media in their daily lives, including the way they consume news nowadays. Thus, this study explores media exposure, purpose of utilising and impacts of social media on consumption of entertainment news among young Malaysians aged from 18 to 35. A survey quantitative research method was utilised in this study to find out the consumption of entertainment news of young Malaysians. Findings show high preference for entertainment news despite a lower overall news consumption with entertainment news chosen as the most read section and social media being the primary source of such news. Young Malaysians consume entertainment news to have follow-up information of their favourite celebrities and tension free reading. The findings also show that social media does impact readers from the varied and mixed effects differing of dependency, habits and emotional needs. The theory applied in this study is theory of uses and gratification.
