Abstract
Every year, the Chinese drama industry has produced numerous Chinese novel adaptation dramas. It is undeniable that many works are loved and favoured by the audience. However, some of them also get a lot of dissatisfaction that causes the audience to feel disappointed. Therefore this study is carried out to aims to find out the audience’s needs and wants for the novel adaptation of the drama and to explore the factors that the audience believes have the greatest effect on the success or failure of the adaptation dramas. The main objective of the study is to discover the factors that influence the young adult audience acceptance of the Chinese novel adaptation dramas. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the research questions that intend to find out are the opinions of the audience of the role of actors and role of production setting in the novel adaptation drama as well as the expectation of the audience toward the novel adaptation dramas in the future. Moreover, the research approach for data collection will be conducting three focus groups. As a result, the research finds out that the respondents believe that the actors’ role in the drama consists of acting skill, appearance, popularity and others. Meanwhile, the production setting’s role includes costume and makeup, production design, production setting for novel adaptation and so on. Lastly, the audience’s expectation involves factors causing the failure of the novel adaptation dramas, factors look forward to improving the novel adaptation dramas and should respect the novels.
