Abstract
Background music is an important element that helps to enhance the narrative in a film. As the visual effects of movies are becoming more and more high-quality and made interestingly, the background music in a film also needs more diversification to make the film more interesting. However, most of the filmmakers only know how to present a good visual of the film but do not know how to make the background music more interesting since they do not have much knowledge about the importance or the types of background music. By using the film Blood Diamond (2006) as the film which has been discussed in this research, it has been analysed how the fast-paced music of the fighting scene brings a nervous mood and how the slow music of the parting scene can bring a sad mood in Blood Diamond (2006). Thus, this study aims to find out the relationship between different types of background music and the mood which have been used in the film Blood Diamond (2006). A content analysis was performed to answer the research questions which are how the fast-paced music and slow music which have been used enhance the narrative of Blood Diamond (2006). Based on the results, this study found out that the findings can be supported by the concept of cognitive theory. The findings of the research will enable the video creators and the client to develop a deep understanding of the knowledge of background music in film.
