Abstract

Every Disney Princess Movies presented by Walt Disney Company are known as the classic childhood movies for every child, especially toward females. Due to the portrayal of every Disney princesses having almost the same physical appearances and good personality, this lead to the beauty standard of the young females has changed accordingly. This paper discusses the fact that the beauty standard portrayed by Disney princesses in Disney Princess Movies will influence young Malaysian females’ self-esteem level. The movie examples used in this paper are Cinderella (1950), Beauty and the Beast (1989) and Frozen (2013). The Quantitative Descriptive Research Method is conducted where online survey questionnaires are spread in to study the young Malaysian females’ self-esteem level based on the portrayal of Disney princesses. The main targeted respondents are within the age of 18 to 23 years old and each of the 20 respondents within the same age group are needed, total 120 targeted respondents are required. The targeted respondents who are in this age range are known as the traditional-age college students where most of the female college students will be more concentrated on their image at this particular period. Consequently, every age group successfully hit the target of at least 20 respondents filling up the survey questionnaires where the highest number of respondents are from 21 years-old. Besides, every statement asked about the portrayal of Disney Princesses in terms of beauty standard occupied up to 60% and above agreements. The section of the possible perception of young Malaysian females toward the portrayal of Disney Princess Movies also occupied up to 60% of agree and strongly agree responses. Furthermore, the category of ‘Always’ occupied the highest percentage about the statement of possible actions that will be conducted by young Malaysian females in order to reach the beauty standard portrayed by Disney princesses. Last but not least, the portrayal of every Disney princess is actually following the beauty standard from the society, this means that the young females are following the portrayal of Disney princesses but initially are following the society’s beauty standards. This is because the presentation of Disney princesses in terms of their external looks and internal characteristics are reflected by society's expectation.
