Abstract

The usage and perception of recovery strategies among team sports and individual sports athletes may have differences due to nature of the sport. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is any difference on the usage and perceived effectiveness of recovery strategies (physiological and psychological) between individual sports and team sports athletes. In addition, the present study aims to identify the reasons on the usage of different recovery strategies among the athletes. A total of 111 respondents (mean age = 20.64 ±1.623 years), which consisted of 58 individual sports and 53 team sports athletes from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Kuala Lumpur participated in the study. Data were collected by means of -online questionnaire and causal comparative survey design was employed to analyse the data needed. The results revealed that there were no significant differences (p >.05) in the usage of physiological and psychological recovery strategies between individual and team sports athletes except for foam rolling (p <.05). In terms of perceived effectiveness of physiological and psychological recovery strategies, there were no significant differences (p >.05) found between individual and team sports athletes except for foam rolling and active recovery strategies (p <.05). Comparing different level of representation, the results indicated that there were no significant differences (p >.05) in the usage of physiological and psychological recovery strategies among athletes, except for usage of music (p <.05). This may indicate that both individual and team sports athletes perceived most of the physiological and psychological recovery strategies as equally important for them. It was also found that level of representation has minor influence on the usage of recovery strategies. The results of this study may indicate that both type of sports required and perceived both physiological and psychological recovery strategies to be equally important for their demands in their sports. Future research should focus on higher level athletes such as state or national athletes to obtain more meaningful results as they might use wider range of recovery strategies.
