Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and correlates of burnout among SUKMA coaches in Wilayah Persekutuan during Covid-19. The study was conducted using a non-experimental correlational design. The sample consist of 107 SUKMA coaches in Wilayah Persekutuan from 35 sports, with age ranging from 22 to 64 years old (M = 36.93, SD = 10.40) and coaching experience from 1 to 35 years (M = 10.49, SD = 7.60). All of the participants were required to answer three questionnaires in the form of Google Forms which included Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator scale, Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale Short Version and Job Insecurity Scale. Results showed that majority of the SUKMA coaches in Wilayah Persekutuan experienced low levels of emotional exhaustion (n = 85, % = 79.44) and depersonalization (n = 84, % = 78.50) with high levels of personal accomplishment (n = 96, % = 89.72) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Multiple regression analyses showed that job insecurity (β = 0.354, p < 0.05) was the only significant predictor of burnout. Specifically, only cognitive job insecurity (β = 0.283, p < 0.01) had significant positive impact on burnout out of the two dimensions. Age and years of experience did not significantly moderate the relationship between job insecurity and burnout. In conclusion, SUKMA coaches in Wilayah Persekutuan experienced low levels of burnout during the Covid-19 pandemic. Job insecurity appeared to be the only factor that lead to burnout.
