Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a technology innovation which transform the construction industry into digitalisation. BIM is changing the design process and providing benefits especially for the architecture sector. BIM is developed to replace the traditional 2D approach as BIM able to solve many design problems. BIM can lead to greater efficiency, effectiveness and productivity in a project. Therefore, the government put a lot of efforts in encouraging the BIM application in Malaysian construction industry. Despite with the benefits, however the construction players are still struggling in applying BIM at early design phase. This paper aims to assess the benefits of applying BIM during the conceptual design phase in construction. At the same time, the challenges faced of BIM application in Malaysian construction industry which regarding people factor, technical factor, legal factor and process factor have been raised. Next, the effective ways to promote BIM will be explained in this research. A 200 set of questionnaire survey was distributed to the target respondents who are currently working in architectural firms. The data will be collected and analysed using descriptive analysis. It is expected the findings from this research will inspire the construction players in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry to apply BIM in their future projects.
