Abstract

The negative environmental effects of the construction industry have led to a rising recognition that there is a need for a more sustainable and responsible approach to the current practices. This growing attention pushes the government and professional bodies in Malaysia to be more proactive in alleviating this problem without restraining the need for development. But, have these borne fruits? The implementation of green building requires the knowledge and participation of every party involved in the construction industry. The aim of this research is to look at the challenges of green building development in Malaysia’s construction sector. Through intensive literature study, it has brought better understanding on the definition and purpose of green building. In addition, this research will find out the implementation of green building initiative in the construction industry in Malaysia. This research also recommends some the critical success factors for the implementation of green building in Malaysia construction industry. Data of this research were collected through questionnaire survey from the appropriate professionals. The findings of objective 1 had result in the most agreed factors in the benefit on green building is that it will improve occupant’s quality of life. Furthermore, the findings of objective 2 had resulted in the most agreed factors in the challenge of implementing green building in Malaysia is it required more time and cost investment. Finally, the findings of objective 3 had resulted in the most agreed factors in the critical success factor for the implementation of green building in Malaysia is by offering financial assistance from stakeholder. Lastly, it is recommended that the government sector and the stakeholders should providing financial support in order to encourage the construction parties to implement green building in their development concepts.
