Abstract

Malaysia just like any other developing country considers the construction industry as one its main contributors to their countries Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Therefore, the obvious move was to further improve and innovate their construction system from the typical conventional approach, which unresolved issues such as delays to deliver the project, unnecessary wastages and less of sustainability practice are a normal occurrence. The government decided to replace it with Industrialized Building System (IBS) which can resolve the aforementioned issues. However, this construction method did not take off without its fair share of problems in in its early stages in Malaysia. The concept of Industrialized Building System (IBS) is not new to Malaysia as it was introduced in the country over 60 years ago during the 1960s. Since then, the government has continuously encouraged the use of IBS in Malaysia construction industry, while although it has improved since then, unfortunately implementation of IBS is still far from being the main construction method. A number of factors affecting the implementation of IBS in Malaysia’s Construction Industry as its primary construction method. This dissertation is to discuss the implementation of IBS in Malaysia’s Construction industry, the barriers and benefits of IBS, and the strategies which can improve the adoption of IBS in Malaysia construction industry.
