Abstract
In Malaysia, the Green Building Index was established by the Malaysian Green Building Council to promote green building practices. However, green building has not been widely implemented here despite the Green Building Index having existed for over 10 years. This is evident as around 60% of new buildings in Malaysia are still not adopting green building as of 2018. Residential buildings that are certified as green building make up less than 20% of total new buildings in that same year. The aim of this research is to give an overview of the level of awareness and familiarity of homebuyers in Malaysia about the Green Building certification in Malaysia, while providing data on homebuyers’ opinions to gauge the level of acceptability of green building certification in Malaysia. In addition, the objective of this research is to determine the level or awareness and understanding that homebuyers have towards green residential buildings in Malaysia, identify the barriers to implementation and promotion of Green Building in Malaysia, and to determine which benefits homebuyers in Malaysia prioritise when purchasing a green building. This research focuses on homebuyers in the Klang Valley region of Peninsular Malaysia which is home to around 23% of the country’s population. Around 100 copies will be collected from the respondents to ensure the data has as little error as possible and to fit within the workload and time restriction of the research. This research can assist developers and contractors to assess the current level of awareness of Green Building among homebuyers in Malaysia and assist further research to be done on this topic. This research also raises awareness of homebuyers regarding the benefits of green building.
