Abstract

In Malaysia, affordable housing is an important issue in parallel with the urbanisation process of society. The increase in demand for affordable housing is directly proportional to the urbanisation process. There was a priority given to the provision of adequate and quality affordable housing for the people in the 11th Malaysia Plan. Although the Malaysian government is giving greater emphasis on efforts to develop more affordable housing in order to solve the housing problem for the low-income families, but the supplies of affordable housing still encounter many problems due to several factors. Hence, this research aims to analyse the affordable housing purchase among Malaysians. The objectives of this research are to determine the problems which are faced by Malaysians in affordable housing purchase, as well as to determine the factors and measures of affordable housing purchase among Malaysians. In order to achieve the objectives, literature review and questionnaire survey are conducted; whereby 78 responses have been obtained through WhatsApp and Instagram. With the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), descriptive and inferential analysis such as independent samples t-test, one- way ANOVA and multiple regression were conducted to answer the research objectives. Finally, this research concluded that there was no significant difference on the problems of affordable housing purchase among the gender, residency status and highest education levels; whereby there was a significant difference among the age groups and income levels; and the factors had accounted for 59.5% of the variance in the problems of affordable housing purchase; whereas the problems of affordable housing purchase had accounted for 57.1% of the variance in the measures to ease affordable housing purchase. Ultimately, these findings could serve as references for the future development in the affordable housing purchase among Malaysians.
