Abstract

BIM stands for Building Information Modelling and is a workflow process. It is based on models used for planning, design, construction and management of buildings and infrastructure projects. The BIM model is the virtualization of the project from concept to completion and the entire life cycle. By using BIM, such projects can be completed more efficiently and economically, and have less impact on the environment. Therefore, the advent of BIM has brought many benefits and this application solves many construction problems that the traditional approach cannot be solved in the construction industry in Malaysia. However, the progress of BIM adoption is low in the construction industry in Malaysia. Most of the people in the construction industry still prefer to use the traditional approach due to the lack of a correct understanding, misunderstanding and bad impression of BIM. Therefore, the process of integrating BIM and the traditional approach is hard to achieve. The objective of this research is conducted to investigate the differences between BIM and the traditional approach in the construction industry. Besides that, this research finds out the impacts of BIM on the traditional approach in the construction industry. Furthermore, this research identifies the integration of BIM and the traditional approach in the construction industry. In the beginning, the literature review is carried out to provide a theoretical background for the objectives of this research and helps to strengthen and consolidate the knowledge base of BIM and the traditional approach. Then, the research methodology is determined the ways to approach data collection for this research. The quantitative approach which is the questionnaire survey is chosen to collect the data from the stakeholders in the construction industry such as architects, contractors, quantity surveyors, engineers, etc. The data collected is analysed by using the SPSS software and the descriptive statistics method has been used. It is hoped that the research findings can provide a better understanding of the differences between BIM and the traditional approach, the impact of BIM on the traditional approach and the integration of BIM and the traditional approach in the construction industry in Malaysia.
