Abstract

As the university students’ population skyrockets, the sustainable development in the institutions of higher learning has come into the limelight in a bid to tackle the associated environmental impacts. Yet, Malaysia’s Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are making relatively little progress in infusing the sustainable practices into the university campuses. Henceforth, this research was carried out to explore the Green Rating Schemes that can be utilised to assess the campus greening efforts in Malaysian HEIs. Further, the impediments to campus greening and the pragmatic approaches to incorporate sustainability in Malaysia’s university campuses were identified and investigated via questionnaire survey. A total of 129 university dwellers, including the academic and administrative personnel, students as well as fresh graduates, from both green certified and non-green certified campuses in Malaysia were involved in this survey, and the data collected were analysed accordingly. Via this research, the review and comparison on the Green Rating Tools as well as their applicability in Malaysia’s HEIs were indicated. A variety of in-depth information relating to campus greening, particularly the obstacles and measures to transfer HEIs to a green university community, were explained in this research too.
