Abstract

Construction is a complex and changeable project, and all aspects of it are critical and important factors for its success. The key element of a construction project is the foundation which supports the whole construction structure. In the engineering industry, there are many construction projects facing the problem of improving ground condition. As a result, ground improvement is the most important step for a construction project to build a strong and sustainable foundation. There are several techniques for ground modification that can be used to increase soil strength and overcome poor soil conditions of the site. In addition, the selection of ground improvement methods is also a factor that must be considered to determine the success of the project but it is always a difficult problem for the construction industry. This research will address and elaborate on the engineering issues that faced in the construction project, as well as the ground improvements which have been applied in the Malaysian construction industry. This research will define the classification of the ground modification techniques in the construction industries. Furthermore, this research will also investigate the methods of ground improvement in construction sites. In addition, this research will propose a solution to improve the ground used for construction sites Literature review, questionnaire survey and the SPSS Statistics are used to achieve the objectives. The technique for data analysis used in this research was descriptive statistics which applied the mean of the variable to analysed. The result of the analysis data shows different ground improvement method used in construction site, the factors to consider in selection of the techniques and the emphasis advantages of each method. This research can let more construction companies know the importance of ground improvement. This research also can help construction companies strengthen geotechnical engineering and assist on determine the choice of ground improvement methods to prevent project failures.
