Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been introduced to the construction industry of Malaysia for more than a decade. It is one of the digital transformation tools that brought many benefits to the Architect, Engineer and Construction (AEC) Industry. This has gradually increased the awareness of the construction practitioners concerning the BIM application and implementation. It becomes one of the prerequisite skill sets for a Quantity Surveyors (QSs) to fulfil Clients’ and AEC industry’s requirements and expectations. However, the adoption rate of BIM in Malaysia higher education institutions (HEIs) is still low especially in the quantity surveying (QS) Programme compared to other countries. The objectives of this research are to identify the readiness of HEIs to implement BIM curriculum for QS Programmes and the practitioners’ perceptions of the HEIs readiness to provide graduates with BIM skill sets. A hybrid mode of empirical survey i.e., online interviews and questionnaires have been adopted in this research. A total of eight (8) educators (public and private HEIs) and five (5) practitioners (contractors and consultant firms) have been selected. Findings from the empirical survey indicate that majority of the HEIs have already developed and conducted BIM curriculum in QS programmes toward eliminating skill gaps in graduates. However, the industry is still facing difficulties in recruiting BIM capable QS graduates and different levels of BIM skill gaps need to be addressed and resolved.
