Abstract

Green roof system is considered a relatively new concept in Malaysia even though it has been implemented widely in the developed countries. Generally, green roofs provide many benefits in term of environmental, economic, and social. For example, provide better aesthetical quality of the built environment, reduce urban heat island effect, stormwater management, improve air quality and reduce noise pollution. However, the implementation of green roof systems in Malaysia is still limited. Hence, a better understanding on the challenges faced by implementation of green roof system in Malaysia is important. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by green roofs implementations in Malaysia. The survey which done by 89 respondents has revealed the nine challenges in implementing green roof systems in Malaysia. The most critical challenge that had been proved in the findings is the High installation cost. Thus, more efforts are needed to solve these challenges and increase implementation rate of green roof systems in Malaysia. One of the methods will be to increase the manufacturers and suppliers of green roofs components in Malaysia.
