Abstract
Social media has slowly taken over our privacy to exchange the accessibility of platforms for our daily usage. Users are encouraged to share their daily activities online which could lead to oversharing and end up putting their private information online easily with just a click. With this simple act, users have created a paradise for stalkers or criminals to make use of their information. Besides, social media often gains user’s trust by providing privacy settings, it takes the advantage of users in disseminating their information that should never be exposed to outsiders. Therefore, in this research paper, it is to find out how privacy invasions happen, what are the reasons affecting users’ privacy awareness and how the target audiences perceive their privacy awareness level. By understanding privacy awareness, the study is able to raise awareness to the public about the importance of privacy invasion and alert them to take action on it. A Data Sharing Model is applied to show the relationship of how privacy of users being exposed by social media and third parties. Communication Privacy Management Theory is also applied to measure how social media users are regulating their information online. The research concludes that the users’ privacy awareness level is considered as high, but they are not cautious enough towards this issue which leads to their unsharp opinion and they do not have the intention to find out more about privacy invasion.
