Abstract

The growth of social media has been a multidimensional phenomenon where it plays a larger role in our lives. Social media has become firmly integrated into a lot of people’s daily lives. People spend nearly a quarter of their daily time on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram and YouTube. In today’s environment, many people use their smartphones as virtual companions. These devices leverage electronic social media networks to keep users up to data on their friends, favourite celebrities and global events. However, social media does have downsides like internet addiction or the issues of privacy and also can negatively affect mental health in numerous ways. People started to be affected by social media which led them to have feelings of depression, anxiety and also poor sleep quality. Therefore, this research aims to study the relationship between social media, depression, anxiety and poor sleep quality among youngsters. The method of research is using survey questionnaire and 100 respondents will be participating in this research. The Social Comparison Theory and also the Social Displacement Hypothesis will be applied in this research to study on this topic further. This study will help to determine the negative impact of social media among youngsters. According to the data analysis, it has shown that there is weak relationship between the social media, depression, anxiety and poor sleep quality. To conclude, the usage of social media would not lead to mental health among youngsters.
