Abstract

In society nowadays, more and more people start to use online media to let out their emotions and the need to connect with others. Social media has brought people the convenience of communication and connection but it cannot completely solve people's loneliness like offline interaction. Therefore, this research aims to determine the factor that causes loneliness towards social media users. The theory used in this research is media dependency theory. This theory proposed that the more social functions the media plays for the audience, the more the audience depends on it. The method used in this research is online survey, respondents can complete the survey whenever they are free at any places. According to the data analysis, it has shown that there is a statistically significant moderate positive correlation between media dependency and loneliness. The higher the level of media dependency increases, the higher the level of loneliness. By conducting this research people can realize that social media exists to establish connections between people, allowing people to connect with each other, share and discuss their life. But its function should not be the "only connection" between people.
