Abstract
Since the COVID-19 outbreak, social distancing has become the standard protocol to prevent spreading Covid-19. However, it is challenging to monitor such protocol compliance of a crowd in an indoor venue solely by human, such as in a business premises and shopping mall. In this context, this work explores Bluetooth-based localization techniques to realize crowd monitoring. The aim is to monitor crowd size in indoor environment such as small and medium enterprise (SME), restaurants and premises. Bluetooth-based indoor location techniques are chosen because it is becoming very common that consumer electronic devices nowadays are equipped with Bluetooth module, such as smart phones and smart watches, and they were carried by the users almost anytime and anywhere. The business owners can easily monitor the position and social distance among their customers/visitors through this technology, without infringing personal privacy. Indoor localization is a technique that uses wireless signals (such as Bluetooth) to estimate the location of the signal emitting devices carried by the user through algorithm. This research will be helpful for business premises and SMEs on tracking social distance among their customers/visitors as it is a more effective method compare to hire a personal to monitor social distancing among the customers/visitors. The premise owner can easily track the time and position of every customer in their shop.
