Abstract
This project will employ alkaline treatment method on fish scale and fish bone-based calcium to synthesize the biocompatible and bioactive hydroxyapatite (HA) bioceramic. This project had compared the properties of HA derived from fish scale with fish bone, including morphology and size, phase purity, as well as hardness and Ca/P ratio after sintering. Characterization of the synthesized HA from fish scale and fish bone was using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Vickers microhardness tests and bulk and relative density measurement. Ca/P ratio of synthesized HA will also be determined for characterization. 1.25 to 1.47Ca/P molar ratio of were successfully synthesized via alkaline treatment process, which forms high-density sintered pellets with high hardness which are 3.0087 g/cm3 and 3.325 GPa respectively. The main objective of this project was achieved, which are to synthesise hydroxyapatite via the hydrothermal method and microwave method and to investigate the effects of processing parameters on the properties of hydroxyapatite.
