Abstract
BIM technology has been widely used in construction and many construction parties, primarily in developed countries are familiar with it. Traditional methods are still used in Malaysian construction firms, even though certain construction parties have seen or acknowledged the benefits of BIM implementation in construction. As a result, the Malaysian construction firms is constantly suffering labour shortages, a high rate of accidents and weak competitiveness when compared to foreign contractors. As a result, it is the moment for construction firms to pay more attention to new technologies since their adoption is a game changer in reducing or eliminating the issues that it faces. Hence, the aim of this research is to survey the current Building Information Modelling implementation in Malaysian construction firms. The objectives of this research are to identify the uses of BIM, as well as to determine the benefits and barriers which drive the BIM implementation in Malaysian construction firms. A literature review and questionnaire survey were done to meet the research objectives with 93 responses acquired via online questionnaire survey sent to registered contractors under the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and myBIM. To address the research objectives, descriptive analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software. As a result, this research found that BIM implementation are greater than average level in local construction firms, and the overall identified benefits contribute a statistically significant amount of variation in BIM implementation, but overall expected barriers do not. Lastly, these results might be used as a guide for the development of BIM technology in Malaysian construction industry in the future.
