Abstract

Design principles are the distinguishable characteristics and associations that govern the processing and composition of design elements. While composition layout setting is the key to establishing a good frame in design. Good composition design in a motion graphics video can actually depict the relationship between the characters and help viewers understand the story better. This study aims to analyze the design principles and composition rules used in the artworks of The Motion Award by Motionographer. The qualitative method that will be used in this research is cases studies, as it allows the researcher to investigate the essential characteristics, values and meaning of the cases. The researcher identifies that the most commonly used principles are contrast, balance and emphasis, and each of the design principles is complementary used to achieve a good design; the most used composition technique in the artwork is the rules of thirds as the subject is always placed at three of the intersection points of the vertical and horizontal lines. Since this research is based on artworks from The Motion Awards 2021 nominees or winners, the types of motion graphics may vary in terms of storytelling or infographic, so future researchers are suggested to look for more similar types of cases to study
