Abstract

In this qualitative research, the researcher analyzed the art elements and design principles applied in three types of significant Pua Kumbu motifs - engkaramba motif, baya motif and buah bangkit motif. The aim of this research is to identify the notable characteristics and art style of Pua Kumbu motifs, so future students or creative workers can refer to this research when they want to recreate the Pua Kumbu motifs accurately. The researcher found out that the common characteristics shared by the three motifs are: all of them are symmetrically balanced; and the motifs are usually beige in color, with dark brown or black as decorative color, and red as background color. It is important to note that the case studies are solely based on the researcher’s observation and interpretation, with the reference of art elements and design principle theories.
