Abstract

Kanamurai is a 2D casual educational action mobile game that teaches how to write the 46 Basic, 20 Dakuten and 25 Handakuten Hiragana characters. Players will be put into the shoes of a samurai, defeating all foes and threats by drawing the hiragana characters correctly. Elements of gamification such as progress bars, engaging gameplay mechanics and other core aspects such as diverse level themes, and exciting visuals, shall be leveraged on and incorporated in order to bring life and excitement into the traditional medium of learning. The objective of the project is to help people who are interested in learning japanese or those who are beginners at it to have an easier time and more enjoyable experience learning Japanese. The fun aspect in starting to learn Japanese is often lacking due to the inability for learners to engage in interesting activities like, conversing with other people, reading comics, playing games , or watching shows in the language. Beginners typically only have access to boring textbooks, and countless practice sheets to go through in order to learn the Japanese writing systems. Aside from that, it also serves to provide free Japanese education to people who cannot afford to buy expensive textbooks and enroll in Japanese classes. Therefore in conclusion, Kanamurai is a game that serves to transform the toil and labour of practicing the writing of the Hiragana Japanese characters to a fun and pleasurable activity. Upon successful completion of all the achievements of the game, players would have mastered reading and writing the 71 Hiragana characters. This will then make it easier for them to continue learning Japanese as well as increase their motivation to further their studies in the language.
