Abstract
In this thesis, it discusses the synthesis, and characterisation of sulfur particles, and studies the antibacterial activities of Ca-Alg-S. The objectives are to synthesise sulfur particles stabilised by sodium alginate which are dispersible in water and ready for gelation with calcium, to characterise sulfur particles by using PXRD, FESEM, Zeta-potential, UV-VIS and FTIR, to prepare fibrous calcium alginate-encapsulated sulfur particle as a hydrogel (Ca-Alg-S), to freeze dry Ca-Alg-S to form dried “spongy” cryogel with increased surface area and lastly, to study the antibacterial effects of freeze dried Ca-Alg-S. The sulfur particles synthesised using a simple method which is using sodium thiosulphate, sodium alginate and acetic acid. The morphology was studied using FESEM and PXRD. The antibacterial activity of cryogel Ca-Alg-S was studied using the disk-diffusion method. Results showed that Ca-Alg-S has antibacterial effects against gram negative and gram positive bacteria
