Abstract

Tradescantia spathacea Sw. exhibits a wide range of pharmacological actions, including antituberculosis, anti-cancer, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. Hence, the project aimed to study the phytochemical screening of Tradescantia spathacea Sw. leaves, isolation and characterization of the pure compound from the plant and extraction using a Soxhlet extraction method with hexane and ethyl acetate as the solvent. The dried crude extracts were then analyzed for the antioxidant activities and total phenolic content assay. The spectroscopic technique such as FTIR,UV and GC-MS were conducted for characterization of the isolated components from T.spathacea Sw. The results showed that hexane crude of T.spathacea exhibited a higher extraction yield at 1.90% compared to ethyl acetate crude. For the TPC assay, ethyl acetate crude has the highest value while for TFC assay, hexane crude has the highest value. Moreover, for DPPH assay, hexane has the highesr percentage inhibition than ethyl acetate crude. In FRAP assay, it shows the same trend as TPC in which ethyl acetate extract shows a greater value than hexane extract. In GC-MS analysis, three compounds were identified in hexane and ethyl acetate at different retention time, benzeneacetic acid,3-methoxy-4-[(trimethylsily)oxy]-,ethyl ester, 1,2-dihydroanthra[1,2-d] thiazole- 2,6,11-trione and ethanethioic acid,S-[8-diethylphosphono] octyl] ester at Rt of 20.851, 24.238 and 28min. This research is significant because the antioxidants contained in the plant have been shown to be helpful to human health and may be discovered and developed for medical uses in the future
