Abstract
Wound healing is always interfered by wound infection and inflammatory response. Therefore, wound treatment medications usually possess both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the current medications might bring some allergic responses or adverse effects, thus requiring a safe and natural source of alternative. Peperomia pellucida, a plant that is traditionally used as a wound healing remedy but it is not established in the healthcare industry due to insufficient research. This study aims to investigate the in-vitro antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity of P. pellucida ethanolic extract. Disk diffusion method was performed to test the ability of the plant extract to halt the bacterial growth. Positive control, chloramphenicol at 30μg and the plant leaf and stem extract at 1000 mg/L exhibited inhibition on Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus mirabilis. The inflammatory activity of ethanolic extract of the leaf and stem part were tested by the inhibition of albumin denaturation assay and the proteinase inhibitory action assay, using acetylsalicylic acid as positive control. The percentage of inhibition action of all samples were calculated. In the inhibition of albumin denaturation assay, acetylsalicylic acid, leaf and stem extract showed inhibition of 89.41±5.62%, 49.21 ±10.95% and 44.86±8.38%, respectively; while in the proteinase inhibitory action assay, each sample exhibited 84.55±4.47%, 41.89±9.88%, and 43.38±5.20% of inhibition. In conclusion, the ethanol extract of P. pellucida possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity
