Abstract

Ginger was a multifunctional crop that could be used as spices, seasoning as well as herbal medicine. Since then, ginger has been proved to possess some medicinal effects such as antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and antimicrobial activity. The health benefit properties of ginger were mainly attributed to its phytochemical compounds like gingerol, shogaols, zingerone, zingiberene, and other phenolics compound. Such versatile properties have raised the demand of ginger in the market from year to year. Various growth factors should be taken into consideration in order to increase the production of ginger. Thus, this study was carried out in order to evaluate the effect of silicon fertilizer and light emitting diode (LED) on the growth rate and yield of Zingiber Officinale Roscoe. Ginger plants were cultivated hydroponically by using cocopeat as the growing medium. Different concentrations of silicon (0 ppm, 500 ppm, 750 ppm, 1000 ppm) were applied to the ginger plants, either with or without the supplement of light emitting diode (LED). Growth parameters including leaves number, plant height, chlorophyll content and photosynthesis rate were measured at week 5, 7, 9, 11, 13. The findings showed that the growth parameters of the gingers were in an increasing trend to week 13, However, no significant difference was observed among the ginger plants with different treatments (p < 0.05). Further study needed to be carried out for a more accurate conclusion.
