Abstract

Prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes has increased dramatically worldwide over the last 20 years and this trend is expected to continue. Therefore, this scoping review is aimed to investigate the complex reasons behind hyperglycemia in order to minimize the diabetes and prediabetes prevalence. However, this scoping review is mainly focused on the body composition in association with glucose intolerance among prediabetes adults in Asia which assess the total body fat, lean body mass, visceral fat and muscle mass in the population. This scoping review was guided by Arksey and O’Malley methodology with five steps: (1) identifying research questions, (2) identifying relevant studies, (3) eligible study selection, (4) charting data and (5) collating and summarizing results. There are 10 articles included after screening of 180 titles and abstracts. Most of the studies are cross-sectional investigation with an analysis of positive correlation between body composition and glucose intolerance. These studies show a consistent focus on the visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, lean mass, muscle mass and bone density between the level of impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and HbA1c. The participants of the studies are mostly 20-60 years with non-diabetic, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in Asia countries. The higher level of IFG and IGT were significantly correlated to a higher total body fat mass but lower total body lean mass. In short, body composition is associated with glucose intolerance as there is a positive relationship between these two indicators. Nevertheless, more studies are needed for a deeper understanding of this scoping review title
