Abstract

Postural stability and regulation are very important aspects for daily activities, physical activities or even playing sports and exercises for individuals of all ages and activity levels. The purpose of this study was to compare the postural stability among Tunku Abdul Rahman University College athletes. A total of 50 Tunku Abdul Rahman University College athletes (age = 21.44 ± 1.2 years old, height = 168.98 ± 9.11 cm, weight = 63.54 ± 13.12 kg) participated in this study. All athletes categorize into different group: 1) sport class (contact sport or non-contact sport); 2) sport type (individual sport or team sport); and 3) gender (male or female). All participants required to perform postural stability test by using biodex balance system. Data analysis showed that there were no significant differences in postural stability between contact sport (M= 0.37, SD= 0.11) and noncontact sport (M= 0.31, SD= 0.09); t (48) = 1.74, p = 0.09, individual sport (M= 0.34, SD= 0.13) and team sport (M= 0.33, SD= 0.08); t (48) = 0.39, p = 0.70 as well as male (M= 0.35, SD= 0.12) and female (M= 0.31, SD= 0.07); t (48) = 1.51, p = 0.14 among TAR UC athletes in overall stability index results. The study concluded that there is no significant difference in postural stability between contact sport and non- contact sport, individual sport and team sport as well as male and female among TAR UC athletes
