Abstract
This is a descriptive study based on the analysis of 50 and 100-meters Men’s Freestyle events during the Malaysian Open 2021 swimming championship. A total of 8 Male National-Level swimmers (age = 17.75±3.105years; height = 174.13±3.871cm; weight = 69.13±1.553kg; years of experience = 10.88±1.959) took part in this study upon their participation in the 50-meters Men’s Freestyle event (n = 4) and the 100-meters Men’s Freestyle event (n = 4). The four variables in this study (stroke count, stroke rate, distance per stroke and swimming velocity) were analyzed using the DartFish Performance Analysis Software (Version Pro S). Comparisons were made between the 50-meters Freestyle and the first and second lap of the 100-meters Freestyle to see the differences based on the four variables. The average values of each of the four variables were obtained through the DartFish Performance Analysis Software and found that the main 50-meter Freestyle stroke count, stroke rate and swimming velocity had achieved a higher average value respectively, as compared to the first and second lap of the 100-meter Freestyle. However, a larger distance per stroke value was found in the first lap of the 100-meter Freestyle as compared to the second lap and the main 50-meter Freestyle event. As such, it was suggested that swimmers need to maintain their swimming velocity (based on both distance per stroke and stroke rate) based on the transition from Lap 1 to Lap 2 to achieve a faster final lap time. Swimming coaches may plan and organise new training programs to help Malaysian swimmers maintain their distance per stroke, stroke rate and swimming velocity across both laps of a 100m Freestyle race
