Abstract

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been a leading cause in the whole nation since December 2019 which led to millions of reported positive COVID-19 cases. The sleep quality and motivation level of athletes which play an important role in sporting performance has been greatly affected due to the movement control order, travel restriction, and closure of sports facilities and buildings. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effect of COVID-19 lockdown on sleep quality and motivation level towards sports participation in competitive endurance athletes in Malaysia. Method for the present research is a questionnaire that contained instruments a) Demographic background of athletes; b) Sports Motivation Scale-II; c) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Participants n=86 (60 males, 26 females) participated in this study. In this study, it is found that the frequency and duration of training hours per week reduced from before the COVID-19 lockdown and after the COVID-19 lockdown where the percentage of 8 to 14 training sessions per week dropped from 45% to 37.2%. There was a significant difference found in motivation according to age year and level of participation in sports. On the other hand, there was a significant difference in sleep quality according to age, gender and year of participation in sports. In conclusion, possible factors of poor sleep quality and low motivation level are due to sleep disturbance, insomnia, female hormones, anxiety, stress and lack of sponsorships
