Abstract

The purpose of this research was to examine sport participation and the psychological well-being in a sample of university students. This is a research method using online survey to collect data. A total of 315 students (male = 63.2%; females = 36.8%) (Mean age ±SD = 21.04±1.411) from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College Kuala Lumpur campus participated in this study. The 18-items Psychological Well-Being Scale (18PWB, Ryff & Keyes, 1995) was adopted for this study. Pilot study reported a reliability score of 0.904. Physical activity was measured using the Physical Activity Index (PAI). Analysis of PAI showed only 5% of the participants was in excellent category, 50.2% was in the ‘fair’ category while 11% in ‘needs improvement’ category. Inferential statistics showed insignificant differences in the mean psychological well-being scores in any of the 6 sub-scales (autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance) according to the gender, age, level of education, type of sport, level of participation, and years of experience. Correlation between total psychological well-being score and PAI category revealed a positive very low significant relationship. For future research, similar survey should consider undergraduates from more universities in Malaysia
